Racial Harassment Complaints Filed In LA County

You Have Rights As A Worker. I Will Help Protect Them.

We need to take a minute to talk about a lawsuit filed in the Superior Court of Los Angeles County against Vivint Smart Home. The complaints were filed on behalf of four former employees and alleged incidents of “workplace racial harassment, retaliation, wrongful termination, and racial discrimination.”

One plaintiff, in particular, brings some complaints that show us how alive and well racial discrimination is in the workplace. Christopher Brown said he started working for the company in June. He alleges that soon after he got there, he was subjected to racial comments from his boss. Among them was the frequent use of the N-word and being asked questions that began with “Do black people normally…?” and “How to do black people…?”

It is 2018 and we are still dealing with this in the workplace. This lawsuit is not out of the ordinary. At The Kaufman Law Firm, we see this kind of thing all the time and we will work tirelessly to stop it. And it is not just racial discrimination.

If you need a Los Angeles workplace discrimination attorney, you can turn to us. We will have your back from the beginning to the end of your case.

What Happens

When people think of workplace discrimination, they typically think of racial and gender discrimination, but there are many other kinds. State and federal law prohibit all of the following types of discrimination against people for any of the following reasons in the workplace:

  • Their race or color
  • Their nationality
  • Their religion or creed
  • Their sexual orientation
  • Their gender identity
  • Their disability
  • Their sex
  • Their marital status
  • Pregnancy status

Take a moment and look through federal and state protections for people in these groups. When you look at that list, you will see some problems we have seen for a long time. Other items on the list are newer in terms of protections, such as gender identity and sexual orientation.

Regardless of the type of discrimination that is happening in the workplace, the only way to make it stop is for brave workers to come forward and, if necessary, file lawsuits to awaken the public to what is really happening. We’ve seen how successful the “Me Too” movement has been. It has taken bravery and a public platform for real changes to be made.
