Nobody should ever have to worry about being discriminated against for any reason in the workplace. However, we know that you may need a Los Angeles discrimination attorney if you are facing a hostile work environment. At the Kaufman Law Firm, we are ready to get to work on your behalf. Today, we want to talk about a case of sex discrimination because it highlights one of the many ways that employers treat women differently than men in the workplace.

The case of the pilot who was too short

Today, we want to bring you a story from outside of our coverage area because it highlights one of the many ways in which employers discriminate against women in the workplace. For our story, we go to Columbus, Ohio, to Shari Drerup. She is currently being represented by well-known attorney Gloria Allred in her sex discrimination lawsuit against NetJets Aviation.

Drerup’s story began when she landed the job of her dreams – a staff pilot position flying NetJets’ Phenom aircraft, an 11 occupant craft that serves as a private jet.

While she was training for the job, it quickly became apparent that she would not be able to fly that aircraft. She was simply too short. Drerup does not dispute this, and she did not want to fly unsafely, even though NetJets suggested several ways for her to try – booster seats, platform shoes, etc.

Drerup did, however, make it clear to her employer that she was “trained and rated’ to fly other kinds of aircraft, including another that NetJets regularly uses.

The company instead chose to terminate her from the company. That in itself could be understandable, but Drerup claims that men in similar situations (those too tall to fly certain aircraft) were reassigned to other aircraft and not fired.

“In my opinion, this constitutes sex discrimination, and is clearly a double standard for male and female pilots,” said attorney Gloria Allred.

According to the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), sex discrimination is against the law and involves treating someone, whether an applicant or employee, unfavorably because of that person’s sex. This covers all aspects of employment, including:

  • Hiring
  • Firing
  • Pay
  • Job assignments
  • Promotions
  • Layoffs
  • Training
  • Fringe benefits
  • Other employment conditions
